Chris Weitz To Direct New Moon Movie

December 11th, 2008 at 10:18 pm by Kaleb Nation

Entertainment Weekly sent me this earlier today. I have no confirmation yet from Summit, so this is still not final:

Sources tell Entertainment Weekly that Summit Entertainment is about to hire Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) as the shepherd for New Moon, the second installment of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling Twilight series

Christ Weitz

Chris Weitz

Weitz is best-known for his work with his brother Paul. The two directed and produced American Pie and then were nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay for About a Boy, which they also co-directed. Chris’ first solo directing gig, The Golden Compass, didn’t do well stateside but was a hit internationally.

Twilight, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, has grossed more than $141 million so far, but Hardwicke had clashed with the studio during production. It was announced early this week that she would not be making New Moon. Weitz has a solid relationship with Summit’s top brass; he’s considered easy to work with and has experience with special effects. “He’s the quality-of-life-choice,” says one source. While Summit insists “we have not yet signed Chris Weitz to do New Moon,” and Weitz’s agency says no deal has been signed, other sources say the deal is imminent, and that Summit has stopped negotiations with other potential Moon directors. Summit had planned to announce this hiring decision on Sunday, Dec. 14, and could have Weitz in Vancouver, B.C. as early as Monday to start pre-production on the film.

I am very very frustrated right now.

This week has been filled with all kinds of fail.

  2. Katie

Hopefully there will be no harry poter/ twilight clash

I dont think I could pick one movie and I’d be at the theater all day haha

  3. KatRin

Hmm, no commment really; I mean About A Boy is a wonderful movie but obviously not Twilight-comparable, and I didn’t see Golden Compass so… I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. :]

  4. Kaleb Nation

not gonna lie, I miss Catherine Hardwicke lots already.

But I can give him a chance. Hopefully he can do a good job and stay true to the books.

  5. Tracy

I will miss CH’s enthusiasim dearly, but I belive the gender hype is dumb. I just hope he does a good job.

  6. Sasha

Im really excited, The Golden Compass was really good (I recommend it), and that also was based on a book, and from what I’ve heard stayed pretty true to it, so I can’t wait to see what he does with New Moon =)

  7. betsy

I’m still bummed Catherine’s not coming back, but I’m starting to get over it. I love ‘About A Boy’ and have yet to see ‘The Golden Compass’ (i prefer to read the book before seeing the movie), so I guess I’m game for whatever he has to bring to the Twilight world. Hopefully he has read the books already. If not, soon, seeing as he has a very large set of expectations if he is in fact going to be directing ‘New Moon’. I wish him the best.

  8. Tatyana

Well no deals have been signed so are we sure that it’s definite? As for the Golden Compass I haven’t seen the movie but this is an entirely new genre, cast and he has probably grown a lot as a director since 2006/2007.

    Here is his entire resume:
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0919363/

I’m happy that he worked on Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, About a Boy and The Golden Compass as I liked the first two of the three and he has experience with book adaptations. I’m just going to let it play out and hope for the best… no need to bash him just yet.

  9. Anna

I was really mad at Summit for this because Catherine was the fans director. There’s no doubt about it. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to be mad toward the new director. I will give him a chance I just REALLY hope he stays true to the books.

  10. Natalie

At this point I’m upset that Catherine left and almost neutral about Chris. I really loved her upbeat attitude and the fact that she was a fans director, which Chris may or may not be. So far the only thing that really worries me is the fact that he worked on American Pie and that is exactly how I hope Twilight won’t turn out… I’ll give him a chance until the movie comes out.

  11. Nutty Netty

    I want Catherine!!!
    >_<

  12. Rosalie

I will miss CH dearly!! SO SO DEARLY!! I loved her. She wanted a little extra time to make the movie perfect for us and it seems Summit only wants our money. It seems sad that they want the material things. But all I can say about Chris directing that I hope he doesn’t “teen” the movie. Ya know I mean he’s done American Pie! And if he screws up the movie (hopefully he doesn’t for his own sake and safety)(and if he gets it of course) then he will have a legion of teenage girls and possibly Twilight moms, that will want to bite his neck in the worst way possible! Not kidding. He would get sooooooo much hate mail!

  13. Jenna

I may be bashed for saying this, but I wasn’t thrilled with Hardwicke’s directing so I’m looking forward to a change. I also wasn’t thrilled with The Golden Compass, so I’m not sure how I feel about Weitz, either…

  14. Beverly

Wait… wasn’t Golden Compass NOTHING like the book? Hmph.

Maybe I will try what I did for the Twilight movie: have really, really low expectations, so no matter what I see, it will be better than what I expected.

  15. Jen

I thought Catherine Hardwicke was great..it’s too bad it didn’t work out.
We will see how it goes with Chris..I am keeping my fingers crossed that Summit doesn’t push these sequels out sloppily and too quickly though!
I heard Rob and Kristen aren’t very happy either..I hope that doesn’t affect things..

  16. Rebecca

I honestly dont want someone that directed American Pie to be directing New Moon. I liked Catherine Hardwicke. I guess I can’t assume Chris Weitz will be a bad director, though I did really enjoy Twilight. Ugh I dont know. It’s messed up. I absolutly lothe(is that spelled right?) when they change directors in the middle of a series because everything changes because each person has a different vision… ughhhhhh

  17. becky sue

American Pie and The Golden Compass hmm? I don’t quite know about this–IM REALLY WORRIED. But I suppose I was worried about Catherine at first, and she was good. I just always knew she was into the series as much as the Twilighters and would be faithful. I hope to God that this bugger knows what he’s getting into. And that he wont screw it up.

  18. AussieT

Nobody likes change, so I’m happy to take a wait and see attitude with any new director – whether its Chris Weitz or otherwise. Remember all the “bad press” RPattz got from fans when he was first cast – now I couldn’t see anyone else in that role…

  19. TheMrs210

I’m torn on the subject. I loved About A Boy, but then you have American Pie… How do you compare? Are the American Pie movies, a thing that brings him pride or a bad memory? I didn’t see The Golden Compass but from what I’ve read about it, it wasn’t true to book. That’s makes me uneasy. Who knows? We may be pleasantly surprised. (Or completely devastated, but let’s be optimistic! :D)

  20. Marissa

    I hope he does well.

    IN VANCOUVER??? OMGSH!!

I cant believe it’s finally in my city lol

  21. Rochelle

I am just … freaking out. Truly, what are we supposed to think? Catherine was hard to work with? Does that mean she “in general” has a difficult professional work attitude or she fought tooth and nail to make the Twilight movie what it was? If she is considered difficult over accomplishing her vision at any cost and the studio is going with a director that is more easy going, does that mean he’ll roll over and not put forth an absolutely dynamic and decided vision? Well, that freaks me out! American Pie? The Golden Compass? I don’t see anything indie or documentary about his credentials. I do, however, see desired money makers and hype. Please no. I seriously thought the hurdle we had to bound over was just getting the movie made … not securing Catherine all over again and remaining on edge the entire pre, prod and post of filming. Okay, he deserves a chance but I wish Summit wouldn’t take the risk.

  22. Brie

I’ve got to tell you guys, even though he makes me nervous, the budget is the real problem here.
Summit plans to shell out only 50mil for this next movie. That’s down right pathetic and scary as hell for a movie sure to be filled with CGI. At least, it NEEDS a lot of CGI to make it work.

  23. Heather

Not happy at all. Mostly because Catherine is gone. She was perfect for this saga. I’ve seen The Golden Compass, and it was beautiful cinematography wise, but the movie lagged in some parts and apparently book fans shouted curses at him because the movie was a horrible adaptation of the book. They changed the ending because it was too controversial…well New Moon has a bunch of attempted suicides in the end lol. Now I’ve heard people say it was the screenwriters fault The Golden Compass was so awful, but the director should step in and help out with it, since they are directing everything. I have a feeling he was hired because him and Summit are good buddies and he will do whatever Summit wants him to do and not put up a fight for what’s right like Catherine did. At least with him we have hopes for a longer movie lol.

Basically, I’m beyond pissed at Summit. I have lost all respect for them. And I really feel bad for Weitz having to deal with this headache. And I feel bad for the actors, especially since a lot of them signed on just because they knew Catherine was directing. But it’s too late now, Summit is going to do what they want to cash in as much as they can as fast as they can and not care about the fans at all. Whatever.

  24. Siân

That man ruined The Golden Compass. If I ever saw him in the street, I’d probably throw my shoe at him. The bok series is amazing; Phillip Pullman is amazing; the movie was just awful.

And, not only did dude direct The Golden Compass, but he did the screenplay too. Double fail.

I’m expecting New Moon to be astonishingly awful.

  25. Sarah B.

    I miss Cathrine!!!

All I got to say is I REALLY REALLY hope Stephenie Meyer has a big hand in this to help it stay true to the books. The only work of Weitz I have seen are the AP movies. He just better not rush the movies and I hope he has good chemistry with the actors. and they better keep Taylor!!! >.<

  26. Jacq

    I’m absolutely frightened.

This is the guy who botched Golden Compass on his first solo directorial debut. Even with a 180 million budget. Even with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig on the cast list. I’m not sure how big a “hit” it was internationally (as EW puts it) since it has faded into complete obscurity.

Do I think he can do New Moon with 50 million (which is the budget Summit is reportedly giving it)? No. Do I think he is ready to take on the series by Monday? No. This is a very possible train-wreck scenario. Based on his resume, it’s going to take a lot to convince me that he can do New Moon and Eclipse justice.

  27. Erin

He doesn’t like the casting director’s choice of Taylor as Jacob. He is going to have a LOT of teenage girls (& twi-moms) hating him by the end of it if he casts someone else as it. Taylor is great. Catherine was great. Bring back Catherine!

  28. Nazneen

Catherine did a really great job on the film, Twilight. I think she would make New Moon a great movie too. But since that option is out, and this Chris Weitz is chosen instead. I don’t know. It might be better if the film is made from a female’s perspective.

And I haven’t watch The Golden Compass yet. But some(or maybe more) said that it ruined the book. I just hope New Moon is going to turn out great. It should be great. It MUST be great. No doubt about that.

  29. minaimo

well hardwicke did a great job with twilight, so obviously there’s going to be misgivings about the change of director. I also hope the as a guy he gets the romance part of this right. (not to be sexist or anything but hardwicke as i said did a great job with it in twilight

  30. irunwithvampires

I’m not going to lie, this week has been a really bad one for the Twilight world in my eyes. I REALLY miss Catherine, and i honestly dont think this guy knows what he’s getting into. If he hadn’t been friends with the bosses at Summit, i doubt he would ahve gotten the job. And im worried because it seems he cant direct a good movie without his brother. I’m afraid he’s going to make it a teeny vampire comedy. bleh. But I’m trying to give him a chance, like i did with Rob in the beginning, and now look how far that’s come…

  31. Rakey

I don’t have an opinion on him. I’ve heard that About A Boy was fabulously done. But I heard that The Golden Compass was horrid. That is strayed from the book a TON and things were WAY out of order and such. I hope he does a good job with Twilight or millions of teenage girls (and a few thousand teenage boys) will want to kill him.

  32. Talkerwolf

I liked the Golden Compass and I think it stayed pretty true to the book, but a different director means the whole movie could have a difference to it. But you know, as long as he does a good job, does it matter if it’s not CH. So yeah, I’m just gonna wait and see, its also not offical yet so it might not be him :-))

  33. Owen

    its hasn’t been confirmed yet.

  34. Kira

Well I enjoyed The Golden Compass but it kinda worries me, because the movie didn’t really follow the book. Everything was moved around and they just completely cut out the ending. There’s not much you can change with New Moon other than shortening some of the wallowing.

  35. Ashley

I have read and seen The Golden Compass and really enjoyed it, except that he changed the ending. Although I don’t think it was so much changed as cut short, I’m thinking that might be added into a sequel? If there ever is one? Anyway, American Pie was so long ago I don’t think people need to be worrying about that. Stay optimistic.

  36. Samie

im not a happy camper! but i can give him a chance i guess! lol… ONLY ONE CHANCE

  37. Bekah

NOOOOOOOO!!! That guy completely ruined the golden compass!

Oh well at least it isn’t the guy who did Eragon *shudders*

  38. Hope

    Amen, Bekah!

  39. ERIKA

Give the guy a chance :)

  40. Shakesgirl66

I am nervous and worried. As I have said in other comments. What is this going to mean for the cast.

I am now worried what scenes they plan on shooting in B.C. The only ones I can Think of are the one dealing with Italy, which wouldn’t make much sense.

  41. Wendy

    Many, many thoughts…
    None of them exceptionally good.

    American Pie? Fantastic.
Now, instead of Edward asking Bella to marry him, and being truly thrilled by the idea, he’ll drain a few elk, crash through Bella’s window, cop a quick feel then remember she can’t really put out. So off to Alaska, for a one nighter with Tayna.
And Alice; “Remember that time—we ate that band camp?”
Fabulous. Nothing says epic romance like American Pie.

  42. Kristina

I will never see the Golden Compass; but if it is as bad as everyone says – I am really worried about what he will do to New Moon. Plus, I will miss Catherines excitement about movie, for the fans!

  43. Cricko

I’m worried, because I didn’t like that The Golden Compass was a lot different from the book. But I guess I have to give him a chance.

  44. goloptious

I haven’t seen much of what he’s already directed, but I am willing to give him a fair shot at it. I think that it’s really beyond my control so there is no point to being upset about it.

  45. Mary-Shannon

No! He is going to destroy New Moon just like he did to The Golden Compass!!!! We need to get Catherine back!!! Summit is making a bad choice. Twilight’s success got to their heads and now they think they can do anything they want with New Moon!

  46. Eliper

There were several issues with Twilight and the first of which was Summit taking the helm when Paramount dropped the ball. That alone chopped the budget that was NEEDED to make this film work. In the movie world, Summit is an infant and let’s face it, money can help make movies better – it definitely would have in this case.

I think Melissa Rosenberg was a far bigger problem than Catherine, so I’ve been disappointed to read that the screenplay has already been written by her for New Moon. Of course I haven’t read it, but I still hope they scrap it – I know that’s harsh, but Twilight’s screenplay was choppy in all the crucial places. Catherine succeeded in pulling off the “look” Twilight needed and Melissa screwed up the “feel” of it. For me, the only successful characters were everyone EXCEPT Edward and Bella’s connection. My husband, who hasn’t read a page of any of the books even caught on to the fact that Jasper is really a bad-ass and that there’s a lot more to him than what we got to see so far. It was the subtleties of his character that told his story. He even believed the connection between Bella and Jacob. Edward and Bella’s relationship was forced at us. Stephenie made me believe it, Melissa did not.

So, since we appear to be stuck with a craptastic screenwriter and the same studio that still, remarkably, is not planning on putting the six figures into New Moon that it needs ($50 mil. just ain’t gonna cut it, folks), I guess we’ll have to make due with another director to try to save the rest of the franchise from sucking out loud.

  47. Caitif

Have Summit ever considered GUILLERMO DEL TORO or ALFONSO CUARON as Directors for NEW MOON? It sounds pretty good for a movie like NEW MOON…

  48. TwiGirly

Well, the Golden Compass was amazing so hopefull he’ll be able to make New Moon amazing as well. Dissapopinted about Catherine, she really was doing a great job adaption wise and now I’m a little worried… Especially since they’re saying they chose him because he would take less time then Catherine, which is so terrible because she wanted more time so the movie would be right for the fans! Doesn’t summet realize if the movie tanks with the fans they will loose a lot of money?? ARG! I just hope we can turn this guy into a fan as well so he’ll at least care how it looks. But again The Golden COmpass was also an adaption, and it was brilliant so I have high hopes for him. :)

  49. TwiGirly

Also I kind of agree with Eliper! =/ We didn’t get enough small stuff like hand holding, hair brushing, etc. to help develope their relation ship so we saw them get closer… =/

  50. Heather

I wish everyone would stop saying Alfonso Cuaron for director. He destroyed Prisoner of Azkaban. It’s the worst movie in the HP series. He spent too much time putting his own little nuances in the film and didn’t spend any time developing the story properly. Alfonso Cuaron would be worse than Weitz

  51. tayjei

Don’t freak out yet. It hasn’t been confirmed by Summit or anyone. These are all still rumors!

  52. Eliper

Uh, yeah, so I do actually know math. Sorry, I meant to say nine figures, not six.

  53. kim

i liked catherine. i’m sure this guy won’t do a bad job but in all honesty even if it stinks i’m sure we’ll all see it a ton of times! i know that i will andi’ll see eclipse and breaking dawn if they make those too. the fans are amazing and so die hard that they will see the movies even if they stink (twilight totally didn’t!) but who ever directs these is lucky because they will make a ton of money regardless of them stinking or not

  54. Sofia

    I will miss Cath….

because of her most of the cast agreed to do the movie

PS: Talking about Rumors, I read that they are going to substitute Taylor Lautner, is this true?????????????????

If it is, Summit will go to my Dark List.

  55. vivs

well i really liked cathrine h. and i think she did an AMAZING job with twilight. And im sure that if she would have done New Moon then im sure she would have done very well.

At 1st, I had LOTs of doubt about there being a new director. But knowing that he directed the Golden Compass, makes me feel a little bit better and more confident about the success about the movie.

All we can do is stay positive and hope that he puts his best work into the movie. Im sure in the end we will enjoy New Moon as much as we enjoyed Twilight even though there will be a different director. we’ll see, we’ll see.

    vivs!!

  56. E

Well, it’s good that he has experience with special effects, because the Twilight special effects were kinda disappointing(though the rest was good!)

I just really really hope this isn’t like what happened with the HP movies, where the first director got our expectations high with a very loyal and good movie, then the next one messed up and it went downhill from there.

Sorry. I’ve just learned to be pessimistic about things like this.

  57. Sarah

a few days ago i would have been so mad at this guy and summit..but now that ive had a chance to calm down and actually think about the pros and cons of this guy i dont think he will do a bad job…at least i hope so..

did u hear they might replace taylor lautner!?

  58. Theresa

I’m really worried. I didn’t like the filming style so much in Twilight, but at least Catherine was truly dedicated and wanted to stick to the book. She had so many ideas already, I can’t believe she won’t get to do them for New Moon. I hope Weitz doesn’t mess it up or the reason for this whole ordeal is just for more money. I will cry if it’s ruined. I hope Weitz or the future director will recognize the true fan base and give us what we want and not his new idea of the story. I guess we just have to wait and see. I won’t judge him just yet and just hope for the best.

  59. Arielle

I’m really, really worried. I followed the movie from the time it was first announced, and found myself trusting Catherine, because I felt confident that she would do a decent job, and churn out a movie I would most likely enjoy.

With Chris Weitz, I’m not sure. On the one hand, he’ll probably do well with the werewolf transformations. On the other hand, if he cuts Taylor, it won’t matter how good the transformations will be. I won’t see the movie. In my mind, Taylor is the best and only choice for “our favorite mechanic.”

Also, I wonder, with a new director, will we get the same dedication to the fans that Catherine provided? Twilight was a movie made for fans of the book. Will this guy take it and turn it into a heartless blockbuster? I really hope not.

  60. Katelyn

This is the worst day ever. I’m skeptical about Chris Weitz. :'(

  61. jacob'sbella

    this is actually frightening.

i didn’t really think that golden compass stuck to the books and i don’t know how he’ll do with new moon.

as for getting rid of taylor, it’s absurd! whatever happened to ‘we’re doing this for the fans’???

  62. Becky

… the Golden Compass was good, and it did stay fairly true to the books, so that’s probably a good sign. I don’t know much about him though, hopefully he’s good. I liked Cathrine though :(

as long as they don’t have the directer that did the Eragon movie, I won’t get too angry. (please tell its not him) Because Eragon was the worst book-to-movie movie EVER

but yeah, I wasn’t sure about Cathrine at first and I liked Twilight, so I’ll just wait and see.

  63. Juni

I don’t know why but, to me it seemed that Catherine had our back on making sure that the movie would be as best as it could be while still being true to the book, but now that she’s gone I don’t feel reasurred that the movie will stay true to New Moon. Of course we have Stephenie but I don’t know if this guy will listen or even care to listen to her. I hope this guy has realized by now how important it will be to stay true to the book.

  64. Bella

I don’t know what to say. I think Twilight was a great succsess due to having CH. I don’t know how this could be with a new director. I have seen Golden Compass and I sorta liked it. Not much. But It was an okay movie.. . I just don’t know how its going to be without CH. I’m gonna miss her. Twilight was a great movie, due to her. But I’m open to change and I will try and give this director a chance.

  65. Bella

Btw if they cut Taylor, I will not see the movie. I will refues because Taylor is the reason I am going to see this movie.

  66. Bella

I’m just reallyyy worried. I want New Moon to be the best ever. I am terrified of it screwing up. I dont think Chris is up to the whole Wolf thingy. Its going to be a lot of work. But I dont think Chris is up to it. I will miss Taylor if he cuts taylor too. I will be sad.

I WAS CATHRINE BACK!!!!!!!!! I MISS HER ALREADY!!!!!!!!

  67. Wendy

I heard he has not confirmed. I just hope they stay true to the books who ever gets it.

  68. Ember P

I thought that the Golden Compass was a wonderfully done movie, so if they had to go with someone new, I’d say he’s a pretty good choice. I still wish they’d have stuck with Cathrine, though. I really loved Twilight, and she was really in touch with the fan base.

Then again, we may be able to look at better special effects with this next one, too, which is the one place I’d say the last one was lacking. As long as they stay true to the book, chances are I’ll like it.

  69. Kimber

Rather upsetting, I would say. But hopefully he’ll do a good job. But, no offense, considering I’m Team Edward, I know I probably won’t like the New Moon movie as much.
But of course it will still be amazing, yes?
And Kaleb, I love this site. I found it on Facebook and have been pretty addicted to it the last few weeks. You have a lot of patience, stretching out the series this long. I’m going on my fourth time though once I get Breaking Dawn back from my Aunt and I started reading Twilight the first time in August. Can you believe my BOYFRIEND got ME addicted, and not the other way around? Haha.
See you soon, and keep writing. =)

  70. Tia

You know, I don’t really know of anyone who wouldn’t mind waiting a few months longer for New Moon to come out if it meant we could get a better movie than we did for Twilight. Yes, we have to consider everyone aging, but we’re talking about a few months here. I say screw everyone and have Stephenie Meyer direct the rest of the damn series. (A girl can dream, can’t she???)

  71. Hihi

    a bleh

  72. Scott

Did they really mean Vancouver BC what about all the locations for Twilight in the Portland, OR Vancouver, WA area. It would be pretty rediculous to have completely different locations for everything. Though the Cullen house they used in Twilight wasn’t very good it doesn’t really make much of an impact on New Moon.

My biggest fear is that the Golden Compass had so many major plot points changed from book to screen is was practically a completely different story other than the main character and the Polar Bear and if He does that to New Moon who knows where Eclipse will go.

  73. Schadeboy

I think the real question here isn’t whether or not this guy is a good director, but whether or not he will stay true to the book. That was one of Hardwicke’s biggest compliments to the first movie. Her passion for making sure it was made properly. If the rumors are true that she was difficult to work with, I hope it wasn’t because she was fighting to keep certain elements out of the story (such as sexualizing it) whereas Summit wanted to add those elements in.

So let’s hope that this new guy is wise and will realize that making any changes to the story that are radically different from the book would only harm the series rather than enhance it.

  74. Tina

tgc wasn’t too bad. i mean… directing wise. though the movie was very different from the book (like usual) however everything else wasn’t too bad.

i am worried though. summit is pushing new moon way too fast w/ too much force. i mean… they just axed the original director, hired another one in less then 2 weeks, rushed the script to productions, want the actors working in early spring, finish the acting in less then 3 months and have the movie out by november next year. this is ridiculous. on top of all that, as of today, twilight made 140 mil in box office and summit wants the budget for new moon to be 50 mil. are they nuts? what is up with summit?

  75. angela

THIS IS SUCH A RELIEF !!

Catherine is such a bad director, I don’t know who was stupid enough to hire her (I guess that was because they had a small subject). Joe Wright would have been such a better choice for Twilight.

Chris Peitz did a great job with the Golden Compass.

Now, we should begin now to harass Summit to hire Guillermo del Toro for Eclipse !

  76. Wendilynn

World wide Twilight has passed the 170 million mark. Makes me wonder how many of their movies that bombed is Twilight paying the bills for.

As for Chris, I really liked Golden Compass. I never read the books so I didn’t have to deal with the bad adaptation that everyone complained about. As a stand alone movie, it was really good. Loved the bears. If he did the wolves in a similar vein it would totally work. But he also had 180 million budget. I saw American Pie and didn’t care for it. It had its funny moments, but a movie about guys getting laid is not the additude I want brought to Twilight. Makes me wonder if he could really connect to the real good old fashioned romance of the story and the sensual tension that exists without destroying it. Or trying to psycho analyze it.

But the big worry is Summits budget and rushed schedule. Although I found one article where Freg (however you spell his name) said that they wanted to bring a good movie and wouldn’t rush it. But then they book a Nov release date… HELLO?!!

I saw Twilight again for my fourth time. Really liked it this time. But I just can’t get past the ruined “I know what you are” to “Lion and the lamb” love declaration scene progression without wincing. Boy was that butchered. I really don’t think Melissa understands her material and that makes me wonder what she did to New Moon.

I made a mistake, I meant a small budget and not subject

  78. Wendilynn

Kim.. your wrong about the franchise making a ton of money if they fail with New Moon. Summit is shooting itself in the foot if it thinks he can pass off a rushed and substandard product just to cash in on the Twilight craze. They stand to make some serious money, but they won’t if they don’t use the money we’ve given them already well.

    I want Catherine Back ♥

    :(

  80. Jessica

I think that Summit should have just agreed with Catherine. She worked her butt off to get Twilight perfect and she simply asked for more time! Honestly I can wait for New Moon, it just means more build up! Honestly! I refused to watch The Golden Compass (due to the fact that the main character tries to kill God in the last book, (STUPID and AWFUL); and i’ve never even heard of the other movie so for all I know if this guys signed the movie will SUCK! At least Kirstin and Robert will still be in it! :-)

  81. Julia

I think, or more I hope, that he will be able to do New Moon. After all, he’s already made some great films like About a Boy.
But I really would like Catherine Hardwicke to continue her work. Unfortunately, it’s not in our power to change Summit’s decisions.
I’d say we wait and see how things go on.

You’re nominated by me again! How could I not nominate The Twilight Guy as one of my favorite blogs. So, you’re it again!

    I’m really glad, actually.

I mean, he has the experience of working with FABULOUS special effects (The Golden Compass had AWESOME special effects); I’m thinking long-term, for werewolf-shape-shifting, burning newborns, etc.

    Go Chris!

  84. Sveta

i like just an email from summit and its from chris weitz
he says he is going to direct new moon
and for those of you who heard that taylor lautner is going to be substituted..
    ITS NOT TRUE!!!!!
here is what is says in the email:
“Dear fans of Twilight, New Moon, Bella, Edward and Jacob,

In the past few days I have been involved in a whirlwind romance with Stephenie Meyers’ extraordinary books.

And I am very grateful to have received her permission to protect New Moon in its translation from the page to the screen.

For fans of the books and of the film of Twilight, this may come as an unexpected twist. So I want to write briefly to try to put you at ease, and to give you reason to hope for and expect the best.

For the last decade of my career as a director, I have chosen to make adaptations of complex and involved works of literature. This has always begun with the love of a book and its characters, story, and theme; and it has always involved a respect of and responsiveness to the feelings of other people who loved those books.

When I saw the film of Twilight, I was alternately entranced and left hungry for more. I was also struck by the extraordinary passion for the characters, story and theme that was evident in the people sitting in the seats around me. My job is to live up to that devotion.

Like many of you, I am a fan of Catherine Hardwicke’s work. I can’t really say much about why she is not doing New Moon because I wasn’t involved in those decisions. But I can say that I will devote myself to making the very best and most faithful version of New Moon that can be brought to the screen. To those who doubt that as a male director I can capture Bella’s experience, I can only say that emotion is universal and that my work has often involved working with some of the most talented actresses in the world.

For the rest, the proof will have to be in the pudding. But I promise to remain responsive to your hopes and fears.

I thank you for this opportunity and for your faith.

    Very best,

    Chris Weitz”

I’m one of those die-hard-twilight-catherine hardwicke fans so I pretty much have the same thing to say ..but disappointment can only run so far. =/ They hit the nail-on-the-head with the perfect director for the books and they go on up and give it up. *KAPOOOEY. I firmly STILL believe that they should’ve allowed Cat’s vision to follow through with the saga because her directing is fan-based and she obviously knows how to catch the jist of the books and create! I think I’ll always feel that way but what is one to do. *sigh. I mean these books are like perfect in sooo many fans eyes I feel this movies different and cannot be screwed up with, then again I’m sure fans for other movies that have been made feel the same way.

Although I’ll never approve of the kick-off of Cat I guess I can say I’m apprehensive and interested in what this “new” director of the next sequel will conjure up.

  87. Elfie

Um, to you guys that thought the Golden Compass was not changed too much from the book…. uh, really? Who have you been talking to? Were you even paying attention?

  88. courtney

Ok everyone is probably going to hate me but…..i have to say i am kind of glad that they got a new director. I think that Catherine is a great person but im not totally thrilled with her directing. I thought the movie was alright but the problems i had with it mostly come from the stuff the director is supposed to take care of……not going to mention what. But I am excited for Chris. He did a fantastic job with the Golden Compass and Im sure he’ll do a good job on New Moon. :)

  89. lauren

i heard that there is a canadian actress joining the cast and that she is a complete unknown! maybe because they are shooting in canada?? i don’t know but i found a link to her fb page – all i could find. anyone know anything more??? my friend works for a casting office and said she is being considered – http://www.facebook.com/srch.php?nm=charlene+mcanoy

  90. Kendall

right…. Catherine was let go because she didn’t want to work on Summit’s timeline. They are looking at the dollar flow. Not the fans. So is anyone really surprised that they picked this director, who is friends with a suit at Summit?

  91. Claire

Okay, i hear he’s taylor lautner is being replace. (http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1601332/story.jhtml)
i, personally, am smad. (sad and mad.)

rofl@ “remember when we ate that band camp”

    that was funny.

  93. priyanka

he seems like a good guy and director. i think he will do well, but i really hope this movie s slightly funny, just like twilight was… and i cant believe its gonna be shot i italy, that is soooo cool, although robert pattinson, the hottest guy ever is not gonna be in it that much… i’m pessimistic and an optomistic at the same time,he he, lol

  94. Ash IS DA BOMB

    Summit Fails.
    End of Story.

  95. Jenny

It’s so stupid them going on about more special fx and stuff cuz the reason twilight is good is cuz they didn’t focus on that. they focused on the story! which is the most important part… they are just gonna turn this book into another overly special-effects movie. rubbish.

  96. Nellie

I really hope he stays true to the book. Like everyone else have already said, Chris Witz really messed yp the Golden Compass. If he ruins New Moon, i will truly want to kill him!

  97. Michelle

I also thought The Golden Compass was a decent film, but I never actually read the book. It was infuriating that it stopped where it did and they aren’t planning to continue it since it did so hideously in sales. It makes me slightly wary, but I think The Golden Compass had a lot of bad publicity from the start which drove a lot of people into forgetting about it before even giving it a chance.

  98. lauren

OMG! They posted info for the casting!!! And now it makes sense that they were looking at that canadian actress (http://tinyurl.com/7urccg)because well she’s canadian and she’s native! it allll makes sense now! http://tinyurl.com/9ay5fw

  99. casey

hey the twilght guy is so cool

  100. no name

i have loads if rumours saying that chris doesnt want robert pattinson to play edward and that he will wont be in eclipse and breaking dawn. is this true??

if it is then the movie will go down hill, you cant just change a actor like that, it will ruin all the movies. rob needs to be edward in all of the twilight movies. he was great why doesnt chris want him???
