Reading New Moon: Chapter 21 (Verdict)

- September 29th, 2008 by Kaleb Nation -

The song for this chapter is Let It Go by Fauxliage (suggested by Monica)

There is something cool about an underground room. I know it probably sounds odd coming from someone who is known to be slightly claustrophobic, but my fear is not so great that I can’t enjoy a few underground spaces with the assurance they won’t cave in on me or begin to shrink Star-Wars-trash-compactor style. When I see this underground place in Volterra, for some reason I was reminded of Jack Skellington’s home in The Nightmare Before Christmas; there is this closed-in coziness to both of them:

What’s this!

Edward is very much on edge the entire way across this hideout. He is, after all, bringing a delightful snack deeper and deeper into vampire country, and the further he goes the less chance he has of getting Bella back out if trouble begins.

Someone asked Bailey and me on Saturday’s Blogtv which scene we are looking forward to the most in the movie, and I can’t remember which one I said. But after seeing the people in the underground chamber sparkle in the sunlight, I realized that seeing Edward in the sun is one of the effects I’m looking forward to the most (I have a hard time imagining a sparkling vampire, so it will be quite an interesting scene. I’ve noticed that the movie people have been very careful not to reveal any scenes of sparkling vampires, so I’m guessing I’m not the only person looking forward to this.

People have been telling me to watch for Aro ever since I started on Twilight. He is obviously some sort of a leader of the group, surrounded by bodyguards who stiffen when Edward moves. He seems to have a quiet power despite his entire demeanor being different from the rest of the people. It makes me slightly uneasy, to be honest.  For him to be so joyful amidst a relatively serious group of visitors, I keep expecting Aro to laugh maniacally, then casually pull out a bazooka and begin blasting about randomly.

“Jane, dear one, you’ve returned!” Aro cried in evident delight. A strange expression came across his face.

“Oh random joyfulness!” he said, grinning from ear to ear. “Alice! Edward! It is so wonderful to see you.”

“Wonderful to see you,” Edward said, nodding.

Wonderful to see you pushed off a cliff, he was thinking. Aro didn’t notice.

“Posies and pockets!” Aro said, skipping merrily to his desk. “And you brought Bella too! I don’t think I could ever be happier!”

He laughed, and then laughed so more, the sounds gradually rising from mere giggling into a high-pitched, animal scream. And then, casually reaching into his robes, he pulled out two gigantic rocket launchers.

he roared maniacally as he pulled the triggers.

Anyhow.

I was expecting Aro’s powers to be something of the mind reading sort. It probably would do good to aid in his judgement, though he appears to be a bit jealous of Edward’s ability to read minds without contact. I noticed quickly that Aro was careful to touch his subjects to get all the latest reports by reading their minds.

Jane has been a bit scary since the first time I saw her in the book. The fact is that despite her seemingly quiet demeanor, there has been an aura of power radiating from her. She is the only person I have seen so far that Edward will show deference towards. And someone having such power that makes Edward Cullen respectful is a scary thing indeed.

Reading New Moon: Chapter 20 (Volterra)

- September 25th, 2008 by Kaleb Nation -

The song for this chapter is Far Away by Nickelback

When I picked up New Moon to read the next chapter, I got an AIM message that went something like this:

-AIM window flashes-

Me: I’m reading New Moon. Shoo.

Rachul: Are you reading THE chapter?

Me: I dunno. Is Chapter 20 THE chapter?

Rachul: Um, yeah. Big chapter. Edward comes back.

Me: AGHALGRLGLAOGLA YOUBLOODYROTTENSPOILER!

I finally calmed myself, but began to turn the pages a little faster as a result of her injudicious choice of words. Bella and Alice begin to enter the city of Volterra: this place I have heard so much about and finally get to see. I’m imagining it being very old, especially with the cobblestone streets, the darkly colored buildings and the popularity of going about by foot, brought about by a place that was built at a time when there were no cars. The guards at the gate are of hardly any use, given the fact that the Cullens have endless supplies of centuries-saved cash:

While reading this chapter, I was distracted when I remembered watching a certain video of Stephenie on Youtube, months and months before I even dreamed of reading Twilight. I remembered her going through this old city, and saying that it had something to do with her books (long time readers of me know I was a Stephenie fan long before I read anything by her, and dug through Youtube for videos of her all the time). Suddenly, I put the two together, and realized that Stephenie had been showing Volterra in the video. A quick Youtube search uncovered the very clip I had seen so long ago:

As Bella is pushing her way through Volterra, trying to find Edward, I’m picturing her in the setting that is in this video, trying to get through the crowds that just keep knocking her out of the way.

After all these months of Edward being gone, there is a strange feeling the moment he appears: for some reason, it seems so natural, like he hasn’t actually been gone for all this time, but instead has simply been invisible to Bella alone. I say this because when he sees her, there is hardly any surprise; though what happens is revelatory in what I have been predicting since Edward left, many many months ago.

Because when Bella actually sees Edward, there is hardly any reaction more than a scream, and that is more from her wanting to save his life. But in the instant that Bella touches against him, she immediately knows he is no longer just a figment of her imagination. After all the hallucinations of his voice and the visions of him in her dreams, Edward is real and there before her. As Bella puts it:

[...] in that instant, I felt well. Whole.

Since chapter 3, in September, Edward has been gone. He took with him a piece of Bella: the missing piece of her soul that has been calling her and torturing her to find again. The moment they are together, it is as if Bella is made whole.

Both Bella and Edward hold pieces of each other that can never be returned, nor cut off, nor broken free. It is because of this when they are apart, there is an almost constant pain within Bella to be with Edward again. The separation of the two pieces is what has been causing her so much pain.

In the same way, if Bella was dead, then she had taken with her a piece of Edward as well, a piece so strongly connected to him that he could never cut it from his soul. Edward is a vampire– he would go on living forever, suffering through each day with a piece of himself gone. And thus if Bella is dead, then enough of Edward is dead as well, so that he might end the remaining piece of himself to be with her again, and make himself whole once more.

Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath, hath had no powers upon they beauty.

If Bella is dead, then Edward feels he must die also — and this time, have no barriers between them for eternity.

But as with Bella, the moment that Edward sees her, it is as if he is whole again: expecting that his death had been so swift, he had hardly noticed, and that Bella is by his side just as he had been wishing. But suddenly Bella tells him the truth, and just like in the video of Stephenie at Volterra, the moment Edward realizes what is actually happening, he immediately changes into defensive mode. In one swift motion, he swings Bella behind him, and crouches ready to defend her from the approaching Volturi.

It was at that moment I fully realized, yes, Edward Cullen is back in town. And he’s not letting anyone come near Bella.

As many of you know I am a little claustrophobic (my worst nightmare was the scene in How The Grinch Stole Christmas, when His Grinchiness squeezes through the chimney and gets stuck…. I still shudder). Thus when Bella plunges down into the darkened depths and then weaves through the cave-like halls, I can’t help but feel a little boxed-in on her behalf. But when they step through the metal grate, and hear it clang shut behind them, it is almost like they have been locked inside an underground prison.

A synonym for ‘underground prison’ is ‘dungeon’. I suppose that Bella’s wave of fear has a solid foundation, as they go to face the Volturi.

Reading New Moon: Chapter 19 (The Race)

- September 22nd, 2008 by Kaleb Nation -

The song for this chapter is Candle by The White Tie Affair

Last week I got the news that Paramore, known for such hits as That’s What You Get and Misery Business, will be contributing two new songs to the Twilight movie soundtrack. Besides setting off a glorious frenzy (adding Paramore + Muse + Twilight obviously gets people excited) the news has also made me aware that the movie people were probably grinning at us the entire time. If anyone remembers, Paramore was the band that the Twilight cast introduced on the VMA’s, before we knew Paramore was part of the movie. Sneaky… :D

With that in mind, I flipped to Chapter 19 as Bella and Alice were boarding a plane to Italy. When they got on the plane I was immediately reminded of my favorite parts of flying: namely, all of it, save for the awful prices of food behind security. Takeoffs are easily the best part, though Bella didn’t even seem to notice, being so distracted worrying about Edward and getting to Italy on time.

And finally, mid-flight, the identity of the great and legendary Volturi have been exposed.  I have been wondering since Twilight what the Volturi are, and why people like the Cullens, powerful enough as it is, would fear or respect them. The fact that the Volturri are so old, and occupy an ancient side of Italy, lends even more mystery to them. If they do not age, it must feel odd to them for the transition from Roman Centurion outfits to modern clothes (besides the obvious shift from cart-and-buggy to the grand horseless carriage).

Just as I had been hoping for back while reading Twilight, the Volturi serve as some type of police force for vampires: keeping them secret, and thus in a way keeping them partially civil, as they can’t simply run out in the open and make tasty snacks out of us.

I felt so sorry for the flight attendant, whose eyes are probably continuing to widen as he overhears bits and pieces of Bella and Alice’s conversation (gasps, questions if Edward has killed himself yet, Bella begging Alice to bite her, etcetera). I also found a wonderful new tagline for Bella on page 442:

Ruining everything.

Destroying the world.

All in a moment of klutziness.

Bella Swan.

Nabbing that sports car seemed remarkably easy; but then again, this is Alice we’re talking about. Going down the road at a speed that would make Edward proud, Alice and Bella will be to Volterra in no time.
