A guy reads Twilight by Stephenie Meyer (2009-2011)

Director for THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE is Announced

I paraphrased this from Summit’s press-release-ese so you’re not here for half a day (full thing at the Lex):

Is he really flipping us off?!

David Slade has been hired to direct THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE from a screenplay written by Melissa Rosenberg. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE […] will be released theatrically in North America on Wednesday, June 30, 2010.

(Stephenie) Meyer stated, “I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing ECLIPSE. He’s a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise. From the beginning, we’ve been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I’m so happy that ECLIPSE will be carrying on with that tradition.”

Filmmaker Slade came to prominence as a director for his work on 2006’s engrossing film HARD CANDY starring Academy Awardยฎ Nominated actress Ellen Page as well as directing 2007’s genre hit 30 DAYS OF NIGHT which opened to number one at the box office its first weekend of release.

In ECLIPSE, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob – knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.

Having not seen either of his films, I don’t exactly know for sure what to make of the new director. All I keep wondering is what he is saying in this photo ๐Ÿ˜€

QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS: Do you agree with the pick for director? Who might you have picked instead?

  1. I'm a little worried myself. I never got to see 30 Days of Night, but a friend of mine did, and she wasn't that crazy about it. She said it was pretty gruesome though….just your typical vampire horror flick….that just so happened to be set in Alaska. It is a little ironic that he filmed this vampire bloodbath and now he has to film a chaste, vampire romance. And the whole flipping the bird thing has me worried too. While not all Twilight fans are 13 year old girls, there defintely are young fans out there. I think Slade may need to think about that and clean up his act a bit

  2. I've never seen either of those movies, so, all I have to say is: HE BETTER DO AN AMAZING JOB, OR ELSE!

  3. Personally, I'm optimistic. ๐Ÿ™‚ For one thing, I'm glad that the director for Eclipse has experience with filming movies that have horror and suspense in them… Like you, Kaleb, the part I love the most about Eclipse is the battle scenes, so I want those to be done well. And since he has experience with darker movies, my guess is that he'll be a great director for those parts.

As for how he'll do with the romance elements, I have no idea, but I won't pass judgment on that until I see the film. ๐Ÿ™‚

As for Summit rushing with releasing the movies… I'm glad that they're sticking to a tight schedule, personally. In a series where the actors can't age too much, it's better that they do them quickly, with as much quality as possible. Honestly, I'm not really sure why a lot of fans seem so worried about this… New Moon has the exact same schedule that Twilight did, and I'm sure that Eclipse will start filming sooner (maybe in the fall or early winter?). In any case, I'm sure they'll allow enough time for each film to be made properly. Summit knows that it's the fans who are dishing out all the money, so I know they're eager to please us. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Having not seen any of his work, I can't really comment on the choice except to say he can't be better than Jaqueline.

  5. I decided I absolutely Love Zella. The other day I was venting how I felt the twilight movie wasn't anything like the book. That I loved the cast, but was quite disappointed by many things they left out and or lines they changed. She then said you should direct new moon!! I informed her they are already filming it and already have a director. Then I get an instant message from her saying I was at twilightguy and someone stole your job!!! I said oh? To which she informed me of this post about David directing Eclipse! To which I laughed and informed her I saw the post and was about to comment on it. I guess she'll just have to nominate me for Breaking Dawn director. I actually never seen 30 days of night but a lot of my friends weren't fans. Which leads me to be skeptical a bit I admit being that's all I have to go off of. However I did see hard candy and loved it. I heard Chris the New Moon director was trying hard to make it as true to the book as possible which I felt was only semi achieved with the first one. So the only thing I would appreciate regardless of who directed is that same determination to stay as true to the book as you can in a film. I am sure he'll do a decent job and I agree on the rushing. Since the vampires aren't allowed to age it'd make sense. Because the actors portraying them do age and believe or not sometimes we humans do quite look different in 2 or 3 years. or even a year. I mean I sometimes still look 16, but you can in fact tell from pictures from when I was 16 and now that I am in fact definitely older. Despite the fact that I am still the same height I was at that age. I'll be 27 ha!

  6. i think they should get david yates…. i liked the 5th harry potter movie (the only book i was ever OBSESSED with before twilight) better than the book! (but that is impossible for twilight)

  7. I liked both 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy, although the Twilight vampires are much different, I think he will be able to deliver us a beautiful Eclipse.

I also love your photo of him, great find!

  8. I don't know what to say….I have never heard of him! I just hope he doesn't screw the movie up…..

  9. Wow.. that's a little disappointing. I've never heard of him, but the one thing of his I've see, 30 Days of Night, was a really bad movie to me. I almost didn't finish it because it was so bad. Then again, to me, it had an unoriginal premise too, and I don't know a lot about him as a director. We'll just have to wait and see!

  10. He sounds ok I have yet to see his work. Another good option could have been Juan Antonio Bayona. He's a spanish horror director ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. I totally agree with the pick. This guy is seriously hardcore; he knows his stuff. Judging by his other movies, I'm sure it'll be great. (But then again, Lords of Dogtown was also a really good movie….but after what Catherine did with Twilight…. (PS: Don't hate me please!!! >_< Yeah Twilight was great, but not as good as it could've been. It was far too rushed and now New Moon will seem off 'cause they'd have to make up for lost relationship-building or else people are gonna think it's too melodramatic.))

  12. To be honest… I'm a little frightened. Anyone who has seen 30 Days of Night would agree (what can I say, I love horror movies and I've been obsessed with vampires long before Twilight, so of course I've seen it ๐Ÿ˜€ ) his vision of vampires is EXTREMELY different than Stephenie Meyer's version… just imagine blood soaked vampires, lots of clicking noises, extremely sharp features…. blood…. EVERYWHERE. It has a few (very very very few) similarities to Twilight (I won't spoil the movie) but still… I think at one point in an interview he said he made the vampires in 30 Days the way they are to show what really vampires are like and not “wimpy” ones like the ones in stories today, like Twilight. (This is his opinion, DEFINITELY not mine) I guess it just surprises me that he would agree to do that movie… I'm sure the action will be great but I'm worried about the love triangle and all… I'll just have to hope he's going to do well ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. I thought Hard Candy was bizarre. But, 30 days of Night was awesome visually. So hopefully the battle in the 3rd will be amazing in that aspect too. I think he is really going to set the tone for the 3rd one which isnt really romance – its a struggle.
